What should one do before coloring their hair?

Tonight is Thursday. I'd like to dye my hair from medium brunette with red highlights to all-over dark red. I plan to use an at-home coloring kit to achieve this.

My questions is... are there any steps I need to take BEFORE coloring my hair? Like... not to wash it the day before or other important things like that?

Any advice on what to do or NOT to do before coloring hair would be much appreciated! :)

If you read the directions to any home dyeing kit...it will usually tell you NOT to wash your hair before you dye it...reason: washing your hair and scalp opens and dries out the hair follicle...making the scalp more sensitive. You are saying you are going red...a very hard color to keep due to fading. Use shampoo and conditioners made to help preserve the color...John Frieda puts out great products to do just that for red-heads....I love red hair, by the way. Do not forget to change your make-up ....blush, lipstick, etc.

Hello, I have been a professional hairstylist for over 17 years, there are different kinds of highlighting techniques, and different kinds of chemicals you can use on the hair to lighten it.

First thing I would do is determine what level your natural color is and then figure out what level/color highlights you would like. (assuming that you don't have any other color on your hair) You can lighten hair with permanent hair color up to 4 levels lighter than your natural color.

If you want your highlights to be more than 4 levels lighter, the stylist will have to use bleach to lighten your hair. In either case remember that hair color will change the texture of your hair a little bit and that you will have to use a shampoo and conditioner that is really gentle and is made for color treated hair.

I would call your stylist and make an appt. for a consultation, (this should be free) look thru some magazines and cut photos of hair color you like, and show them to the stylist. Then if you like what they suggest then go for it. Remember to write down all of the questions you might have, no question is too stupid.

Something to consider before you go, the lighter the color and the more foils that are placed in the hair, the more often you will have to go and more expensive your highlights will be. How noticeable do you want your highlights to be? Highlighting can be really subtle or really bold. I hope that helps. Take Care!

The bleach is brushed onto the hair and then folden into the foil to protect the other hair around it from getting bleach on it, and the foil keeps the bleach from drying out under the dryer.

My number one suggestion to you would be to research the salon before you go. You'll notice right away if it's what you're looking for and if you "fit" there. Most "chain" salons won't give you this look. Do something different. A color most don't have. Dark purple or blue. I wouldn't do the blonde thing because everyone has it. I am a stylist and I do it all the time. Asymetrical or longer on one side than the other. Small mohawk down the middle curving to one side. Whatever you do make sure your stylist can handle the job. And don't try cutting your hair "emo" at home. I've seen some bad stuff come in to my salon lately from this. The best of luck to you. Keep on rockin.

Well, for me, my natural hair color has lighter blonde on the upper tones and darker blonde on the lower tones, so my eyebrows are darker. It's not a problem for me b/c i don't want blonde eyebrows. I would just eyebrow pencil them in anyways. lol Your fine.

I agree with what most of the other answers are saying. I play around with my hair color a lot and have had the same thing happen. It will lighten up each time you wash it. Give it a couple of weeks before you do anything drastic. Plus, if you decide to color a lighter shade, waiting will give your hair a "break" before coloring it again.

First: Purchase a mild Shampoo (To Clarify hair, I will explain why)

Second: TRIM your hair ends (May 1 1/2 to 2 inches)

Third: Here's the magic part: Mix olive oil, almond oil, coconut oil, avocado oil and a "little" honey, (honey u will have to heat so it can blend). Either leave on ALL day or all night (if all nite, DONT use honey)

Repeat this 3-4 times a week, your hair will grow like a weed %26amp; remove all frizz I promise,..... and it will be super shiny!!!!

The clairifying shampoo will help take the oil off your hair when u shower

If you really want to go to a beautician before getting micro braids, I would go for a deep conditioning and that's it. Your hair should be ready for a trim after you take the braids out anyway. Otherwise, you can just do a hot oil treatment and deep condition at home like 2-3 days before getting braids. Make sure the girl that is doing your braids does not braid too tight, especially around your hairline as that will cause SERIOUS breakage. Braids are great for the summer months!

well you might try simply gelling it, combing it forward, and then spiking/flaring the front of it up a a little bit, another option might be to simply try gelling it and then shaking your head allowing your hair to fall naturally like it was wet, and then the gel will keep it that way

So, you could have your hair dyed to a warm chocolate brown. Something a shade darker than your eyebrows. You could have caramelized highlights that accent your eyes and cheekbones in the front. As for you hair you could get long layers that are cut to your face.

Or instead of a carmel highlight you could put in a burgandy tint...sort of like a chocolate raspberry. I know a girl who has a similar look and she looks amazingly pretty especially in the sunlight.

A side part can be seductive but a zig zag middle part could say "playful." Mix up your hair do's. You can pull part of it back with curling pieces hanging from your temples.

Anyway I LOVE LOVE when people w/dark hair like yours do the red highlights, or even blue. The colors seem to pop better with the darker hair. Coloring your hair with kool-aid isn't the best idea. It gives really bad results and it makes your hair super dull looking. I would buy one of those temporary hair dyes they have in the hair dye isle.

I would choose sugar free lemon lime. Just be sure to use enough egg yoke for the conditioning after rinse. To prevent becoming unmanageable after sleeping on it I would add about an ounce of poon tang to the initial application. It works just fine.

My daughter used the cherry kool-aid. It stayed in for a few washings, nothing like a month. It is water soluible which means it's made to blend with water, so if you wash you're hair alot, it will come out quick. She just mixed it with enough water to make a paste and put it on and left it for awhile then rinsed it out. It depends how dramatic of a color you want, for the colors. Her hair was dark brown so the darker colors worked for her. You might want to start out with the lighter colors and work your way to the darker ones since you're hair is so light.

Since this is not a chemical it does not allow any lift so it just deposits the color on hair. And in order to even see results your hair has to be light colored. If you do try this technique, you will ruin all your clothes, pillowcases, skin etc, as this is just kool aid and give you the same (or worse) results as a rinse does.

My advice is just go to a professional colorist. I know people just like the colors that kool aid provides, but with many color brands you can get these same colors, by going to a professional who will tell you what you need to do.

I have Naturally Curly hair as well and mine is a medium like yours. My hair is a red/brown color natural as well and I tend to like my hair up when I am out cause of the brushing it with my hands so much. So what I do is a quick twist corn row that I can make fan out to make my face look a bit thinner and it keeps my hair out of my face all day. I have tried bobby pinning it, clips, and I play with my curls a bit I can have them big if I use a curling iron so that I again don't get the kinky curls that I hate so much getting frizzy. My daughter also has the curls and I love them since they are not mine and she is a blond like her dad. So I like them and she hates them and she is 5 so I have found that putting the curls up out of her face is working more on the frizz she hates too. SO just sit in the mirror and play its a great way to see what you can really do. You can also ask a few friends to help you out get a magazine and pick out something you like and try it. I had to learn how to fix my own hair since I am the only one with curls (other then my daughter) in my family.

Blue is extremely difficult to achieve because you have to get rid of most of the underlying yellow color (the natural color of keratin) in your hair before you apply the Special Effects.

(2) Use a cream developer to mix with this bleach. 40 volume lightens the best, but many people can use a 30 volume to achieve the same results. Ask the salesperson if this is unclear.

(3) Only leave the bleach on for 30-40 minutes. Do not wash hair BEFORE you do this. This will keep some natural oil on your scalp to protect from irritation. Since my guess is that you'll need about 2-3 bleaching sessions to get to a light yellow, you want to minimize irritation.

(4) Bleach again, preferrably the next day or several days later. If you cannot stand having orange/yellow hair in the mean time, then bleach again the same day, but this will seriously irritate your scalp. In the worst case scenario, you can get blisters (chemical burn). As always, leave the bleach on for only 30-40 minutes. Putting a shower cap on helps too, as the heat from your head will speed up the lightening. Longer hair might require additional bleaching on the ends, but not the roots.

(5) When the hair is finally a light yellow (it's important that you do not give up before this stage), get a blue color that is slightly violet. The regular blue color tends to turn hair a greenish blue instead of a deep, intense blue.

I know this might sound like a lot of work, but if you want an amazing head of blue hair, this is the way to go.

pull a small amount into a small clip(or just bobby pin) hair in a small *poof* in the front middle of your head(bang area) then you can either leave the rest straight and down, or pull it into a low-pony, or leave it down with some loose curls, or pull it into that low-pony, but instead of pulling the hair all the way through the hair band just leave it folded in to create a bun type look.

You can do lots of things, but it involves a lot of experimentation, and to be perfectly honest it rarely works out right on the first try, so just keep at it.

buy those soft curlers and sleep in them. it is soooo easy and you save so much time in the morning. you just take them out and only brush the top of your hair otherwise you brush right through the curls. then use hairspray, not mousse. ive found that a great brand of hairspray is matrix hairspray. and for looser, messier curls, you separate each curl in two. it is a more casual, less shirley temple look.

then for waves, sleep in braids. (the number depending on how wavy you want your hair. i would probably recommend about eight or so) then you just take them out in the morning and just brush the top of your hair. you can use hairspray, but i usually dont need it, but then again, my hair holds waves really well......

and if you shower in the morning, scrunch your hair with mousse and it looks pretty good but might get a little frizzy.

and as for just regular hairstyles, i would try sidebangs or whispy bangs instead of thick ones......dont know about the cut i might have to see the shape of your face, sry....

you can also do buns, because they are pretty in, or low pigtails, but you might be a little old for them, but my sister in college looks cute in them so i dont know.....

as for hairbands, very cute and in!!! definitely!!!

so you may want to keep an eye one it and if it does turn "un-natural" you should get the shampoo/conditioner that strips the color, it may hurt your hair but it will get rid of the red

Don't worry about people! :-) You can always dye your eyebrows if it bothers you that much. A salon doesn't charge that much to do it. But DON'T try to do it yourself, you'll end up blinding yourself with chemicals.

If you are not planning on getting your head wet, I would recommend making your hair look beachy already, with loose waves or curls. And I know you said "no braids", but whenever I go to a beach or swimming I wear mine in two French braids with my bangs teased and pulled back/pushed up in the front. you really need a good volumizing system to do it right. shampoo, conditioner, root boost, maybe some kind of light volumizing cream or serum, and of course a good hairspray. two that I really recommend is Redken's body full or Big sexy Hair. chi is also coming out with this flat iron that has a sort of curved plate that keeps your volume at the roots as it smoothes-it looks awesome. I'm going to get one to use on my clients!
